The Demon of the Hair Industry

In every industry, there lurks an evil demon in which workers avoid speaking of. The ‘he-who-must-not-be-named’ Voldemort figure, if you will. In the show business, it was Harvey Weinstein. In the hair industry, it’s FORMALDEHYDE.

“What is that long, tongue-twisting word?”, you ask. “Surely it’s a chemical. But what could be so bad about it?”

Formaldehyde lurks in most Keratin products and is a substance that is highly toxic for a variety of reasons. While young ladies used to rush to salons in the mid-2000’s to have the ‘in’ ‘straightened hair’ look, we have become more informed about the dangers of chemicals like formaldehyde as we approach 2020.

And with this knowledge we receive, it’s only fair to share it! So without further ado – 3 reasons why formaldehyde should be avoided!

1)      If it’s risky for funeral directors, why put it on our clients?

It is a chemical that is used in the funeral industry in order to kill germs and act as a preservative – on dead bodies. Studies have shown the funeral directors who deal with formaldehyde are three times as likely to die from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (“ALS”) aka Motor Neurone Disease (“MND”) / Lou Gehrig’s disease (a specific disease which causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles)

2)      It’s bad for our stylists!

It is a respiratory irritant that can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing and nose and throat irritation. It has also shown to cause asthma and allergies in children. Do we really want our stylists inhaling that daily?

3)      It’s cancerous.

Need we say more? If the U.S. government tells us to stop using something because it causes cancer – we listen. The last thing we want to do is put our clients at risk of long-term, fatal illnesses!

But before you resign to using your ghd® hair straighteners for the duration of the summer, it is not all doom and gloom. There is indeed light at the end of the tunnel!
