What does this qualification cover?
The NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a hairdresser/stylist. Your qualification is split into 9 units. Learners must achieve all units. The units are as follows:
- Advise and consult with clients
- Set and dress hair
- Style and finish hair
- Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
- Cut hair using basic techniques
- Colour and lighten hair
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Perm Hair
- A choice between Plait and twist hair or Cut men’s hairstyles
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety.
They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult with clients and then provide a complete hairdressing service, which includes, shampooing and conditioning, colouring, cutting and setting and dressing, and styling and finishing hair.
In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem-solving and research skills will also be developed.

What could this qualification lead to?
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser (SRGH) with The Hair Council. As a junior hairdresser/stylist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- commercial hairdressing salon
- independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- product manufacturing and training television, film, theatre and media
- armed services
- HM prison service
- cruise liners
- hospitals/care homes
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in hairdressing, these include:
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies (QCF)
- VTCT NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)
